How to Build a Second Brain in Notion (Without the Overwhelm)

A practical guide to setting up a simple, effective second brain in Notion—without turning it into a full-time project.

Everyone talks about building a second brain, but most tutorials end up creating a bloated system that takes more time to maintain than it saves. The goal isn't to capture everything—it's to capture the right things and retrieve them quickly.

Start with four folders: Capture, Projects, Resources, and Archive. Keep it simple. When you find something useful, drop it in Capture. Once a week, sort it into its final home. The key is to avoid over-categorizing. If you spend more than five minutes deciding where a note goes, your system is too complex.

Use Notion's database views to your advantage. Create a single database for all your notes, with tags for type and project. Then filter by tag when you need something specific. This is much more flexible than separate pages for every topic.

Finally, set a weekly review. Spend 15 minutes going through your Capture, cleaning up stray notes, and updating your project trackers. This keeps your second brain alive and prevents it from becoming a digital graveyard.
